Across Europe, in each country's own language.

Customers in each European country should read your site in their own language. We set currency, payment methods, delivery and returns country by country, and build your site or store to Europe's accessibility and privacy rules.

Selling in the EU: one market, many rules

VAT
Each country sets its own rate. Above €10,000 a year in cross-border sales, EU sellers charge the customer’s local VAT through the One-Stop Shop (OSS).
Parcels up to €150
Sellers outside the EU can collect VAT at checkout through the Import One-Stop Shop (IOSS).
Right of withdrawal
14 days to withdraw from an online purchase, without giving a reason.
Legal guarantee
At least two years on goods, across the EU.
Accessibility
Since 28 June 2025 the European Accessibility Act covers most online shops; microenterprises are exempt.

If you do not sell online

One brand, clear in every language

Hotels, design studios, clinics and B2B brands serve European customers without selling online. They need a site that reads naturally in each customer’s language, and an easy way to get in touch.

A page for every language
Separate addresses per language, linked so search engines show each country its own version.
Legal notice and privacy
An Impressum where German and Austrian law asks for one, and a GDPR privacy notice and cookie consent in each language.
Contact in local formats
Opening hours, phone numbers and booking times written the local way, in the right time zone.
Found where you work
A Google Business Profile for each location, and social media in the languages your customers read.

Focus

What has to be right

  • Every country, its own market

Language, currency, payment habits, sizing and delivery expectations set per country, even inside the euro area.

  • One voice in every language

Copy written or reviewed by native speakers, so a premium brand sounds like itself in every market.

  • VAT and customs planned early

Cross-border VAT rules and, when you ship from outside the EU, customs procedures planned into prices and margins.

  • Accessibility and consent built in

The European Accessibility Act and EU privacy rules apply to many online shops serving EU consumers, so both are designed in.

Contact us

Which European market should we open first?

It depends on where demand already exists, what your logistics can serve well and which languages you can support. Your site analytics, social audience and wholesale enquiries usually point somewhere. A short discovery sprint brings this together into a clear first market and a phased plan.

Do we need a separate store for each country?

Usually not. One Shopify store with Shopify Markets can serve several countries, each with its own language, currency, domain or subfolder and payment methods. Separate stores make sense when legal entities, catalogues or pricing differ substantially; we recommend the simplest structure that serves your customers and explain the trade-offs first.

How do you handle several languages?

We build the structure, a shared brand glossary and the review process. Copy in each language is written or reviewed by native-speaking specialists brought into the project, or by your own team if you prefer. We do not publish raw machine translation on a premium brand, because customers recognise it quickly.

How do VAT and customs work when selling to EU customers?

For most cross-border online sales to EU consumers, VAT is charged at the rate of the customer's country, and the OSS and IOSS schemes simplify reporting. If you ship from outside the EU, every parcel also passes through customs, and the EU rules for low-value imports have been changing. Your tax adviser and customs specialist confirm what applies; we set up the store to show prices and taxes as advised.

Does the European Accessibility Act apply to our store?

The European Accessibility Act sets accessibility requirements for many e-commerce services offered to consumers in the EU, and has applied since June 2025; some very small businesses are exempt from the service requirements. Your legal adviser should confirm your position. Either way, we design and build with WCAG as the reference, because an accessible store serves every customer better.
